Everyone, please think
of your biggest personal goal.
For real -- you can take a second. You've got to feel this to learn it.
Take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal, okay?
Imagine deciding right now
that you're going to do it.
Imagine telling someone that you meet today what you're going to do.
Imagine their congratulations
and their high image of you.
Doesn't it feel good to say it out loud?
Don't you feel one step closer already,
like it's already becoming part of your identity?
Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut,
because that good feeling
now will make you less likely to do it.
Repeated psychology tests have proven
that telling someone your goal
makes it less likely to happen.
Any time you have a goal,
there are some steps that need to be done, some work that needs to be done
in order to achieve it.
Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you had actually done the work.
But when you tell someone your goal and they acknowledge it,
psychologists have found that it's called a "social reality."
The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it's already done.
And then, because you felt that satisfaction,
you're less motivated to do
the actual hard work necessary. (Laughter)
So this goes against the conventional wisdom
that we should tell our friends our goals, right --
so they hold us to it.
So, let's look at the proof.
1926, Kurt Lewin, founder of social psychology,
called this "substitution."
1933, Vera Mahler found,
when it was acknowledged by others, it felt real in the mind.
1982, Peter Gollwitzer wrote a whole book about this
and in 2009,
he did some new tests that were published.
It goes like this:
163 people across four separate tests --
everyone wrote down their personal goal.
Then half of them announced their commitment to this goal to the room,
and half didn't.
Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work
that would directly lead them towards their goal,
but they were told that they could stop at any time.
Now, those who kept their mouths shut
worked the entire 45 minutes, on average,
and when asked afterwards,
said that they felt that they had A long way to go still to achieve their goal.
But those who had announced it
quit after only 33 minutes, on average,
and when asked afterwards,
said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal.
So, if this is true,
what can we do?
Well, you could resist the temptation
to announce your goal.
You can delay the gratification
that the social acknowledgement brings,
and you can understand that your mind
mistakes the talking for the doing.
But if you do need to talk about something,
you can state it in a way
that gives you no satisfaction,
such as, "I really want to run this marathon,
so I need to train five times a week
and kick my ass if I don't, okay?"
So audience, next time you're tempted to tell someone your goal,
what will you say? (Silence)

影片中講者要大家想一下人生最大目標時,要大家 take a second。a second 也就是「一秒」,他是想要請大家「花一點時間」去好好思考這件事。所以要只要花短時間去做一件事時,我們常可以用 take a second,比方說:
I'm just going to take a second to introduce the band.
讓我來簡單介紹一下我們的樂隊。


take 常常被拿來當作「花多少多少時間」的「花」,像是:
It took me eight years to completely recover.
我花了八年的時間才完全康復


所以就不難理解,為什麼別人要你「不用趕,慢慢來」時,會聽到人家說 take your time 了。
Please take your time. I'm in no hurry.
請慢慢來,我不趕時間。

think of 的意思是「想到;考慮;打算;認為」。這邊給一個「想到」的例句:
Saying kitschy things like "cheese" forces a fake grin and makes you look like a newscaster or a local politician. Instead, think of a funny memory which will bring out a naturally happy look.
矯情地說 Cheese 之類的話或硬要露齒笑容,看起來會很假,會像新聞記者或地方政客。反之,你應該試著想想有趣的事,帶出你自然的微笑。


它有個意思跟模樣都類似的片語:think about。在表示「想到」時,think aboutthink of 可以互換,就像:
I was thinking about/of you.
我當時正在想你。


但如果在講「仔細思考」的意思的話,那就用 think about 會比較合適;而如果要講「評價某人、事、物」的話,think of 會比較合適。
I really hope that you will think about our marketing proposal.
我真的很希望您可以考慮一下我們的行銷提案。

(in order) to 的意思就是「為了」,它放在句前、句中都可以,前面的 in order 寫不寫都可以,表示「為了」。
In order for you to live and function, you need to burn energy to keep your heart beating.
為了使你正常生活和身體運作,你需要燃燒能量以維持心臟跳動。


in order to 有個類似用法是 so as to,但 so as to 一般不會用在開頭,而比較會放在句中使用。
The A.I. realizes that the most effective way to get the solution to this problem is by transforming the planet into a giant computer, so as to increase its thinking capacity.
人工智慧意識到,要得到解答最有效的方式就是把這個星球變成一個超大電腦,以增加它自己的運算能力。

4A long way to go2:17
a long way to go 其實可以就直接照字面的意思直翻:「很長的一段路要走」,也就是「還有很多進步空間」的意思。
She has a long way to go before she can present the plans to the public.
她在能夠像大家發表她的計畫前,還有很長一段路要走。


想要講進步空間你還可以說:have much room for improvement,也就是留下許多的 room 空間給進步這件事。
His writing is getting better but there is still room for improvement.
他的作文進步很多了,但仍有許多進步空間。


5tempted2:59
tempted 其實就是 tempt 「誘惑、勾引;吸引;打動;慫恿」的過去式,它自己也有意思,作為「有興趣的;很想要做的」,其後常與 to 連用。常常見到 be tempted to 這個詞組,就是「被慫恿、被誘惑去...」的意思
In hard economic times, countries may be tempted to rally the people around perceived enemies.
經濟不景氣,國家策動人民一致對付國內外的潛在敵人比較容易。
